Luton Airport does not belong to one of the large airport industry bodies, it remains the property of Luton Borough Council and is operated and run by a private consortium known simply as London Luton Airport Operations Ltd who signed a deal to continue developing and operating the airport for the next 30 years.

London Luton Airport History

Opened 16 July 1938 and originally known as Luton Municipal Airport it has always been referred to as the London northern terminal.

In the sixties there was a lot of change for London Luton Airport as it played a very important part within the holiday tours business. During this time (1962) the biggest step forward for Luton Airport was the formation of a brand new charter airline Euravia (known afterward as Britannia Airways and more recently in 2004 to Thomsonfly and finally to the current name Thomson Airways who are now one of the world’s biggest charter airlines.

Another major step forward for Luton was the formation of Monarch Airlines in 1968.

From that point on Luton went from strength to strength.
