Gibraltar Airport (GIB) is located on the very southern most tip of the Costa del Sol a few kms from the north African coast and on the edge of the Mediterranean Sea and the Atlantic Ocean. Most people automatically think of Malaga Airport when they think of airports on the Costa del Sol without even knowing there is an alternative.

Iberia have suspended flights between Gibraltar and Madrid due to the current economic conditions

Depending where your final destination is when flying to the Costa del Sol means you may have a real alternative to using the busier Malaga Airport.

Gibraltar Airport is ideal if you are staying anywhere from La Linea right up to Marbella on the Costa del Sol or up to Jerez on the Costa de la Luz. Although it is a very small airport, Gibraltar Airport has flights everyday from Luton Airport and Gatwick Airport with Monarch Airlines, EasyJet and British Airways.

EasyJet recently one the GB Airways franchise off of British Airways meaning that there are now two low cost airlines flying to and from Gibraltar Airport.

Location of Gibraltar Airport

Gibraltar Airport is accessed via the Spanish town of La Linea on the very start of the Costa del Sol. It is about 20 minutes from Sotogrande, 30 minutes from Estepona and 45 minutes from Marbella. In the other direction Gibraltar Airport is about an hour from Jerez.

Eitherway you will ideally need to access La Linea on the coast road and follow the coastline until you get the the slip road to take you across the border. Please remember that by car it could take you and hour or so to cross the border at peak times or in the summer months. If you do not need to enter via car it might be a lot faster to walk across the border.

Gibraltar Airport is located on the right just after you cross the border and go through the customs area.

Parking at Gibraltar Airport

If you need short term car parking at Gibraltar Airport it is located virtually opposite the airport. A word of warning. The short stay car park has very narrow spaces and is not the easiest of car parks to navigate. It closes at 9pm and costs around 40 pence an hour.

Check-in at Gibraltar Airport

The check in desks at Gibraltar Airport are located on the right as you enter the airport through the main doors. As there are never more then two flights at any one time it is very easy to locate the correct check in desk. Normally the check in desks open about two hours before the flight.

Cafeterias and Shops at Gibraltar Airport

There is a café on the upper floor of the terminal building with a sun terrace open during the summer months. They serve anything from toasted sandwiches, cakes and pies to coffee, tea, soft drinks and alcoholic drinks. There is also a general shop at Gibraltar Airport where you can purchase magazines and many electrical items.

The foreign exchange desk is located at the very front of the airport with a window on the outside as well as within the terminal building.

Departure Lounge

To get the to deprture lounge you just head in the opposite direction to the café and the security check is at the end of the hall.

Car Hire at Gibraltar Airport

If you are heading to Spain from Gibraltar then you would be best advised to rent your hire car on the Spanisg side of the border to save getting caught up in the traffic both leaving Gibraltar as well as dropping of your car rental at Gibraltar Airport.
