The airport itself you will find located south west of the main city of Barcelona between the areas of El Prat de Llobregat, Sant Boli and Viladecans (see map for a more comprehensive overview of the location). You will note that Barcelona Airport is only 3kms from the main port at Barcelona making it very useful for people needing to fly in for cruises or simply for people spending time in the city.
Barcelona Airport is considered to be one of the most important in the Catalan area in terms of business and tourism, and as such many improvements to the airport ate currently being undertaken in order to modernise the airport as well as meeting the demands of the growing air traffic that is being experienced. These improvements include new terminal buildings and the addition of a new runway, all of which is known as the Barcelona Plan.
Recently Airport processed some 27.4 million passengers and nearly 300,000 flights, all set to grow with the expansion.
Getting to Barcelona Airport by Road
To access the airport you will need the C-31 which is the main duall carriageway between Barcelona-Castelldefels. This road then connects with the C-32 which is the Barcelona-Sitges road. If you are heading from the city of Barcelona then it is possible to use the ring roads (which should all be clearly signed) using the Pata Sur.
Airlines flying to and from Barcelona Airport
At the time of publishing this page there were around 121 different airlines flying in and out of the Airport making it one of the busiest airports in Spain behind Madrid and Malaga Airport. All in all Barcelona Airport serves some 142 international and domestic routes. In August 2010 the popular budget airline Ryanair opened a base in the airport operating from Terminal T2 B.
