Schiphol Airport Guide

Schiphol Airport is the main airport serving the Netherlands and is located in Amsterdam (officially known as Amsterdam Schiphol Airport). It might be a little confusing when trying to use its airport code as it used to be SPL but is now Amsterdam Schiphol Airport AMS.

The exact location of the airport is relation to Amsterdam is just over 9km (20 minutes) and it is the third largest airport in Europe and is the seventeenth busiest airport in the world. Amsterdam Airport Schiphol handled 43.5 million passengers in 2009

Being such an important airport and located to one of the worlds major financial centres (Amsterdam) it is no wonder that it handles so many flight everyday.

Check In Schiphol Airport

If you are flying within Europe then it is recommended that you check in at least 2 hours prior to your flight. If you are flying to a destination outside of Europe then Schiphol Airport recommend that you check in at least 3 hours before your allocated flight departure time.

Getting to and from Schiphol Airport Amsterdam

The are various ways to get to and from the airport so we have listed some of the main information below to help you plan your journey to and from Schiphol Airport.

By Train: The station is located directly below the main airport and if you arrive by train you can access the departure hall via Schiphol Plaza.

Domestic tickets can be purchased using the yellow ticket machines or from the ticket office located close to red and white checked cubes.

Please note that at night or early in the morning you are advised to use the NS night service which runs once an hour to and from Utrecht CS - Amsterdam CS - Schiphol - Leiden CS - Den Haag CS - Delft and Rotterdam CS.

Travelling time by train to Amsterdam from Schiphol Airport is around 15 minutes, Rotterdam is 1 hour and Eindhoven just over 1.5 hours

By Bus: There are many routes to and from the airport from early in the morning until late at night and you will also find some additional night services.
